Prospectors Anonymous 30% Power Rankings

  • First things first, welcome Randy McCallum to the league!  We've yet to discover if you know anything about fantasy baseball, but at least you're active, which is more than the previous owner.
  • The points listed here are adjusted to account for quality start percentage rather than quality starts.  Despite the fact that not everybody reached 200 QS's last year, it's safe to assume that all the owners here are able to do so, so it doesn't really matter if they get there in July or on the last day of the season.  The worksheet for QS% is listed after the power rankings.
  • Half the battle in this league is getting as many at-bats as possible.  It's not a coincidence that the team in first has the most at-bats (2601) and the team with the least (2159) is in last place.
  • Onto the rankings!  Best and worst move is based solely on what that player has done so far for his team.  Number in parenthesis is the change in points from the last power rankings.
The Elite

1. Staten Island Yankees - 195 (+30)
His reign of terror will hopefully be over soon but he's earned the top spot for now.
Best move: Lyle Overbay- 6 HR, 3 GWRBI
  Worst move:  J.B. Shuck- .211 AVG, .513 OPS in 19 at-bats.

2. Brooklyn Cyclones - 189.5 (+21)

It's time to accept Carmine's not going anywhere.
  Best move: Freddy Galvis - .340 AVG, .906 OPS in 53 at-bats.
  Worst move: Brendan Harris - .148 AVG, .401 OPS in 27 at-bats.

3. F-M Redhawks - 182.5 (+36)
My offense got off to a slow start but has been doing much better lately.
  Best move: Travis Wood- 9 QS, 4 W, 2.24 ERA, 0.91 WHIP
Worst move: Octavio Dotel - 5 ER in 0.2 IP

The Contenders

4. Alburquerque Isotopes - 159.5 (+15)

He's probably only a closer and a solid bat away from joining the elite.
Best move: Rick Ankiel- 2 HR, .370 AVG, 1.208 OPS in 27 at-bats.
Worst move: dropping Pedro Florimon- 6 SBN, 2 HR

5. Salt Lake Bees - 151 (+17.5)

Elite pitching but struggling offense, which is opposite from last year's team.
Best move: Hector Santiago- 31 K, 2.96 ERA in 27.1 IP.
Worst move: Xavier Paul- .217 AVG, .504 OPS in 46 at-bats.

6. Nashville Sounds -  148.5 (-37)  Slowly regressing after a hot start.
Best move: Luke Hochevar- 7 K's, 0 BB, 1 ER, 1 SV in 7.2 IP.
Worst move: Hector Rondon- 7.94 ERA, 1.76 WHIP in 5.2 IP

7. Reno Aces - 144.5 (+50)
Jerry sure loves pitching, but he'll have to find some offensive depth soon.
Best move: Tanner Scheppers- 5 HD, 1.13 ERA, 0.88 WHIP in 16 IP.
Worst move: dropping Jordan Schafer- 4 SBN, .309 AVG, .860 OPS in 68 at-bats.

8. Mobile Baybears - 139.5 (-10)
Mike hasn't made a move since April 13th and the only moves of significance that he's made were calling up Gyorko and Peralta, which I don't count since they weren't free agents that anybody could have picked up.  Despite the lack of moves, he's holding his own.

9. Cedar Rapids Kernels - 133.5 (-10)
I think he's gotten a bit unlucky.  His guys seem to only hit well when they're on his bench.
  Best move: Kevin Correia - 4 QS, 3 W, 3.47 ERA, 1.29 WHIP in 46.2 IP.
Worst move: Hiram Burgos- 10 ER in 3 IP

10. Augusta GreenJackets - 126.5 (-10)
Mike is somehow first in RBI while being pretty mediocre in most everything else.
Best move: Jerry Hairston- 1 HR, .333 AVG, 1.278 OPS in 9 at-bats.
Worst move: Alex Gonzalez- .155 AVG, .434 OPS in 58 at-bats.

11. Montgomery Biscuits - 133 (+25.5)
Rob is on pace for 240 GS and consequentially his pitching ratios are horrible.
Best move: Mike Dunn- 4 HD, 1.26 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 3.25 K/BB in 14.1 IP.
Worst move: Brandon Maurer- 6 ER in 0.2 IP.

12. Lowell Spinners - 116 (-13.5)
Offense might be warming up slightly, but he has a lot of ground to make up.
Best move: D.J. LeMahieu- 1.111 OPS in 9 at-bats and just earned Rockies starting 2B job
Worst move: Steve Pearce- .056 AVG, .206 OPS in 18 at-bats.

The Pretenders

13. Lehigh Valley IronPigs - 101.5 (-81)
Ferris is last in HR, RBI, K, QS, and HD; and his Facebook activity seems to be down as well.
Best move: Kevin Gregg- 0 ER, 2 SV, but it should be 6.
Worst move: dropping Rob Brantley- .375 AVG, 900 OPS in 32 at-bats for Redhawks.

14. Toledo Mud Hens - 88 (-20.5)
It's only a matter of time before he passes Sam.
Best move: Dropping Alex Gonzalez so Prymula could pick him up.
Worst move: J.A. Happ- 4.78 ERA, 1.56 WHIP in 26.1 IP.

15. Kannapolis Intimidators - 93.5 (0)
Sam seems to be less active than he was last year, or maybe he was just lucky last year.
   Best move: Tyler Cloyd- 1 QS, 1 W, 5 K
Worst move: David Aardsma- stuck in minors

16. RancoCucamongo Quakes - 74 (-13.5)
He appears to be catching up but it's just because he has more games started than anybody else.
Best move: Brandon Barnes (Northrop)- 2 HR, 3 SBN, .333 AVG, .934 OPS in 39 at-bats.
Worst move: Vance Worley- 8.03 ERA, 2.15 WHIP in 24.2 IP

Help Wanted!

I originally started this blog with the intentions of sharing it with one or two other diehard 6x6 fantasy gurus.  Unfortunately, the other fantasy guru has been very unreliable and contributed very sparingly to the site.

If you are interested in helping out: either by blogging articles are helping with the design of the website, please let me know.  My friends have informed me I'm a pretty decent blogger but I have absolutely no skills when it comes to making it look good.

The purpose of this blog is twofold.  First, to provide information to 6x6 fantasy owners that they can't anywhere else.  I was unable to find any relief rankings that accounted for both saves and holds so that's why I started doing the relief rankings and hopefully my research and knowledge has been of some help to fantasy owners.  Secondly, it's my goal to also promote 6x6 fantasy scoring and to get away from the traditional rotisserie scoring that over-values stolen bases and saves.  It drives me nuts that the Jemile Weeks' and Juan Pierres of the world can barely find a job on a major league roster, but if they do somehow win a starting job they all of sudden become great fantasy players.

So if you're interested you can leave a comment, send me an e-mail, or send me a Facebook message.  My Facebook page is linked on the side of this page.

Thanks for reading and I also welcome any critiques or input on my work.

Week 7 Relief Rankings

One thing I've been noticing lately is that value is skewed so much by relief wins and relief wins are entirely unpredictable.  Just because players like Bobby Parnell, Alfredo Simon, and Tommy Hunter have been able to get some nice wins recently does not all of a sudden make them elite options (although Parnell will move up if he continues to pitch this well).  And also just because Ryan Cook and Grant Balfour haven't seen very many hold/save opportunities for the A's this year, does not mean that they no longer belong in the elite conversation.  They're solid pitchers on a solid team and shouldn't be forgotten.  Selling high or buying low on players who have gotten lucky or unlucky with their appearances is a great way to create some space between you and the competition.

I did a lot more shuffling up this week than I normally do.  Roles are constantly changing.  Here are a couple of my major moves explained:

Casey Janssen, Tor (+10)
First of all, there is nobody else in that bullpen that is going to fight Janssen for saves so I see his job as very secure right now.  Secondly, he has been lights out this season despite struggling with some minor injuries.  In thirteen appearances this year, he has pitched exactly one inning every time and has only given up four hits.

David Hernandez, Ari (-13)
It's not the minor struggles and 3.57 ERA that bother me as much as the lack of confidence that Gibson has in his reliever.  Coming into the season, Hernandez was supposed to be the clear closer of the future when Putz departed and that appears to no longer be so clear.  He's still a quality set-up man, but he's at risk of leaving the elite category soon.

Junichi Tazawa, Bos (+27)
I was not buying Tazawa's hot start to the season until he was named closer over who I thought was a clearly better choice.  The Red Sox haven't been playing as well recently, but he should still have plenty of save opportunities until Andrew Bailey returns.

Edward Mujica, Stl (+8)
Forget that he lost out on the Miami closing gig to the mediocre Steve Cishek, he's been a quality set-up man in recent years and is a perfect 9-9 in save opportunities this year with not a single walk since being named closer.  Some fans believe Rosenthal deserves the opportunity to close but I don't see it happening this year.

Tanner Scheppers, Tex (+14)
Scheppers has just been too good not to move up.  I didn't see it coming and I don't know what happens when Joakim Soria gets back but ride him while he's there because there will be lots of opportunities.

Brandon League, LAD (-12)
Despite having Jansen in my top five to start the season, I was fairly confident that League would be able to hold onto the closing job and both pitchers would be successful.  I'm not panicking yet but this is something to keep a very close eye on.  Thankfully, if League does lose the closer role, he should still be a valuable set-up man.

New Closers: Kevin Gregg (+12) and Heath Bell (UR)
Ride them while they're hot but don't get too attached.  Don't say I didn't warn you.
